What is Sex
Industry Survivors Anonymous (SISA)?
SISA is a worldwide, non-profit 12
step group of men and women who are
either currently in some area of the
sex industry, and are trying to quit,
or who have already quit but are tying
to find recovery. They meet (whether
that be in person, online, through the
mail, or over the telephone) to share
their experience, hope and strength.
What is the
sex industry? We define the
sex industry as including
prostitution, phone sex, stripping, pornography (acting/and related
activities with this industry such as
directing or producing) mistressing,
madaming, pimping, and all other forms
of commercial sex. This includes
having lovers or significant others
that are in your life solely because
they “provide.”
Who may
join? The only requirement for
membership is a desire to leave the
sex industry and find recovery.
What does
it cost? Nothing. We are fully
self-supporting through our members’
donations that are taken through the
mail or at meetings. No one will be
prevented from attending or joining
because of a lack of money.
What
happens at a meeting? We read
from our literature, have topic
discussions and share our feelings.
Sometimes we may have speakers who
share how they are recovering today.
All participation is voluntary. No one
will put pressure on you to do or say
anything. There is free literature
available at each meeting. If there
isn’t, ask for it.
Who is a
sex industry survivor? We
define a sex industry survivor as a
man or woman (of any race, religion or
sexual persuasion) who accepts (or has
accepted in the past) money, material
items, or any form of exchange, for
sex, a sex related activity (fantasy
included). It doesn’t matter how long
you did it, how you earned it, how
much you got paid, or how long you
have been out of it.
What is the
definition of “time” and is it
different than recovery? Time
is the absence of sex-related earnings
or exchange. Time is also the
acceptance of money or material items
through legitimate means. Recovery
includes the absence of sex related
earnings combined with the absence of
self-abusive behavior and thoughts.
What is the
difference between an Open or Closed
Meeting?
Each SISA group
may decide whether their meeting is
“Open” or “Closed.” In a closed
SISA meeting, only those who are
personally dealing with the sex
industry in their own lives may
attend. Open meetings are open
to non-sex industry survivors, such as
counselors, outreach coordinators, and
other individuals interested in
helping sex industry survivors.
Is there
literature available or what can I do
if there is no meeting near me?
We have many
items of literature
available, including information on
how to start a meeting if there is not
one close to you. We will send you a
meeting starter kit at no cost to you.
We have a website:
www.sexindustrysurvivors.com.
There is also a toll-free, nationwide
hotline: 888-702-7273.
Let us know if you want to form an
online discussion group in your area,
or be a part of our mailing list. A
recovery textbook is in the making, as
well as other pieces of literature.
